The effectiveness of Flickr

Flickr is a web based image and video hosting site. Hosting billions of images, this site contains many uses. There is a large portion of students who learn well through the visual senses. When I teach subjects such as English, History and Geography, I find the students benefit when I display pictures, whether they be in a handout or PowerPoint presentation, from such sites as Flickr that relate closely to the content being taught. Flickr can be depended on to provide pictures that represent the content in the best way, for instance, for medieval history, they possess numerous pictures of castles.

Uses for this technology range from creative problem solving to role playing. This is a learning resource which can be used by the teacher to provide visual aid, or by students in assessment type research. Databases, when available, should be utilised. All round, technology such as this one adds potential to boring classroom procedures with ranging possibilities. Students can work in teams to collaborate on group worksheets and activities that require visual aids.
