The effectiveness of a Professional Journal (e. Portfolio)

The Professional Journal (e. Portfolio) provides a variety of paths for learning. My time with this technology has been limited but already there are many uses for it that I have thought of. For one, much like the WIKIs, it provides an excellent chance for students to learn cooperatively. The ability to post blogs, for assessment questions, homework planning, or just to say hello, gives students an ownership over their learning journey.

This technology provides students with a visual example of learning as a continuous journey. Students will be forever updating information into blogs as they learn it, and perhaps even redoing work where they once thought they had the answer, only to find out they were wrong. While students may not use the coursework your teaching them later in life, they will still benefit from the use of technologies and teamwork.

It may prove useful to experiment with this technology in different educational circumstances in order to find a method that leads to the best learning outcomes. The Profesional Journal could be used for reflections that record the passage of learning as students discover new topics in various subjects.

  2. Hi Damian
Great blog post. I like the idea of using e-journals for extended student learning both inside and, better yet, outside the classroom. Like most e-learning tools they promote learning outside of the classroom context. One of their best features is that they promote discussion between students and teachers which can assist students in thinking about topics in new ways and encouraging them to develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Moreover, discussion increases student engagement which is critical to establishing an effective learning journey. I would definitely support the use of this tool in the classroom.
