The effectiveness of Multiple Choice Quizzes (MCQs)

I have had many experiences over the years with different forms of Multiple Choice Quizzes (MCQs), whether they be with ClassMarker, Bebo or even Facebook. I have recognized early on the potential that these Quizzes can have in the classroom. Their uses are many. They can be used as an activity early on in a course to note where students are at with the content they have learnt in the past, they can be used as practice for QCS exams or other exam situations, and they can be used as assessment themselves, although they should never be used entirely as an assessment piece.

One very successful MCQ is the ILS (Index of Learning Styles). Using a questionnaire with various multiple choice answers, the results provide an indication of an individual's learning style. This is useful in the profiling stage of teaching. "A student's learning style profile provides an indication of possible strengths and possible tendencies or habits that might lead to difficulty in academic settings."
